MOREHEAD Mik Aoki wants to help student-athletes develop their mind, heart and body through the baseball field.

Aoki was introduced as Morehead State’s new baseball coach at Buffalo Wild Wings in Morehead on Tuesday evening.

“For me, I don’t think there is any sport that’s better equipped to teach those types of things than baseball,” Aoki said.

Aoki has coached at Notre Dame, Boston College and Columbia. His teams have won 450 games. He led the Irish to the Atlantic Coast Conference and was 248-253-1 in South Bend, Indiana.

Aoki said having a successful team always starts with the culture and character of the kids, but he describes himself as an adaptable coach.

“Ideally I think what you build is balance,” said Aoki, who was born in Yokohama, Japan and raised in Milton, Massachusetts.

His coaching career began at Manchester Community College as a head coach before moving on to to Ohio, where he became an assistant.

Alongside his accomplishments, Aoki worked to raise more than $75,000 for charity at Notre Dame. The Irish received an award for the most committed team to community service in 2018 and 2019, logging more than 1,000 hours of community service.

Morehead State interim athletic director Jamie Gordon said the Eagles wanted someone who would put players at the heart of what they do. Aoki was the candidate that rose to the top.

“The interest in Morehead State and our baseball program was at a very high level,” Gordon said.

In regards to recruiting, Aoki said he plans on starting brand-new with the position.

“I want to recruit guys that more than anything else seem passionate about playing the game,” Aoki said.

Aoki’s career record is 458-516-2.
