Playing at Johnson Arena for the final time in the 2019 regular season, Morehead State volleyball dropped its home finale to Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks (17-9, 11-3 OVC) defeated the Eagles (20-7, 11-3) in straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-18.
Collecting match-high kill totals, junior outside hitters Olivia Lohmeier and Lauren Rokeypaced Morehead State offensively for the second straight match. Lohmeier led the way with a match-best 13 kills while Rokey added 11. Attacking from the middle, sophomore middle blocker Hannah Keating pitched in eight kills on 18 swings, connecting at a .278 clip.
Passing out 12 assists per set in the match, freshmen setter Bridget Bessler extended her streak of matches with 10 or more assists per set to 11 consecutive matches. On the afternoon, she passed out a match-high 36 helpers.
The Eagle backline averaged 19 or more digs per set for the second straight match, collecting 19.3 digs per set Saturday. Overall, Morehead State dug up 58 balls paced by sophomore libero Allison Whitten with a match-best 15. Fellow sophomore—defensive specialist—Olivia Montelisciani joined Whitten in double-figures, scooping up 13 balls.
Nearly joining Montelisciani and Whitten with double-digit digs totals were redshirt sophomore and redshirt senior defensive specialists Taylor Hodges and Danielle McCarson who both collected nine balls apiece.
At the net, Morehead State turned away eight Jacksonville State attacks, collecting one solo block and 14 block assists on the afternoon. Sophomore middle blocker Mia Swearingen led the way collecting six total blocks, including the team's lone solo block while Rokey nipped on her heels, collecting a career-best five blocks.
Following the conclusion of the team's regular-season home slate, Morehead State hits the road for the final weekend of the 2019 regular season. The Eagles conclude the season with a pair of in-state rivals, travelling to Eastern Kentucky next Wednesday before wrapping the season at Murray State next Saturday.
