As Morehead State University’s construction projects continue to roll along, school officials are asking the City of Morehead to install new crosswalks in areas around campus.

Pedestrian foot traffic patterns are rapidly evolving as students maneuver around fenced-off construction sites.

Speaking at Morehead’s city council meeting Sept. 11th, Facilities Management Director Shayla Ring stated her departments want crosswalks installed next to the Office of Enrollment Services.

“What I am proposing in asking from city council is to create a crosswalk from the enrollment services center across Second Street so that students, specifically blind students living off campus, can cross there safely.”

The school’s Office of Disability Services, which used to be located inside the Adron Doran University Center, was moved to the old Rowan County Board of Education building before ADUC renovations began.

“Also, we have put in new student parking lots down by Mr. Gatti’s on Main Street. We have a lot of students crossing there,” Ring said. “So, we wanted to look at that as well.”

Ring added that those two locations are MSU’s primary concerns.

If possible, the university wants an additional sidewalk placed from the enrollment office across Tippet Avenue.

City officials agreed to consider the matter. They said ordinances would have to be written before they can vote on the proposal during October’s city council meeting.
