One week after the university announced its plan to freeze tuition for the 2018-19 school year, MSU revealed housing rates will remain the same as well.

“We wanted to do what we could to keep the cost of attendance as affordable as possible,” said director of housing Alan Rucker.

Campus housing rates will continue to range from $2,500 to $3,150 per semester. Housing on the university farm is $3,350 per semester. The cost of living in Andrews Hall, MSU's newest residence hall, will not be included in the freeze.

“We want to make sure that Andrews stays premiere,” Rucker said. “Because of the money that we're investing back into the building because of the price, that can happen.”

Rucker said the cost of Andrews Hall goes back into maintaining the $28 million facility.

Similar to the tuition freeze, Rucker said the freezing of housing rates will likely be temporary.

The move comes as university officials discuss cost-cutting measures to meet budgetary challenges as it faces changes to education funding from Frankfort. So far, MSU has cut $1 million in administrative posts and introduced a voluntary separation plan for faculty and staff.

The housing and tuition freezes are both tentative until approval by the Board of Regents in June.
