The Rowan County Fiscal Court voted unanimously to give a one-time funding of $10,000 each for the four local fire departments Morehead, Farmers, Elliottville and Haldeman.

“We know that our fire departments have been frying fish for a number of years and we all know they are underfunded and it’s hard for them to show up at three o’clock in the morning and buy all the equipment their supposed to have to do all these things," said Judge Executive Harry Clark.

The county will also be participating in a non-profit software called OD mapping which will give first responders the ability to submit information to a database about overdoses in the community.

The software will provide the county and participating surrounding counties, with real time updates.

It will also help officials predict when bad batches of drugs may reach the community.

Other key points from the meeting include:

--The county proposed an ordinance of a 3% transient room tax on hotels, motels, cabins and Airbnb’s outside the city limits. The increased tax is estimated to bring $45,000 of revenue into the joint tourism commission.

The money is used to promote events happening in the city and county.

“This tax is not taxing any citizens," said Clark. "This is a tax that the people that come here and enjoy our recreation and our services will be paying.”

--The Rowan County Court House will be replacing the old carpet with vinyl for $39,860.

--The county will also be purchasing a new F-550 for winter road maintenance for $45,990.
