A new student-only parking lot is available behind the Claypool- Young Art building

The new student lot was added after former president of the Student Government Association (SGA) Brandon Bryer worked with his executive board and President Dr. Jay Morgan. Current SGA president Colby Birkes said they worked tirelessly on researching and gathering the necessary resources until they eventually achieved their goal.

“We found out very quickly it was a big undertaking,” said Birkes. “What I didn’t know is that a parking lot of that caliber costs tens of thousands of dollars, it costs thousands of dollars just to pave it and then you have to paint it and then you have to put up signage in order to identify what it is.”

As a result of this extra parking lot, parking pass prices did raise.

“We did have to slightly raise the cost of parking passes just by five to ten dollars,” Birkes added.

But parking spaces aren’t the only thing this parking lot has provided to students.

Student Jacob Greenhill said peace of mind goes a long way when there is no worry about where to park.

“It’s easier to find a place and be more assured that there’s a place for you,” said Greenhill. “My classes vary in where they’re at, I’m all over campus with my classes.”

Ideally, the extra availability in parking will free up spots in other lots throughout campus.

Despite successfully securing the parking lot, Colby Birkes doesn’t believe this is the end for the parking struggle on campus.

“I think eventually, there might be another push for parking but for now students are very appreciative of the parking,” he said.
