Undergraduate scholars had an opportunity to present their research on Wednesday.

The 14th annual Celebration of Student Scholarship took place on the third floor of the Adron Doran University Center Wednesday, April 25. The event showcased the work of students in the Undergraduate Research Fellowship ProgramThe showcase ended with a reception that recognized faculty mentors and gave out awards to participating students of merit. Nearly 200 students presented this year.

The students were judged on the content of their presentation and their ability to demonstrate an understanding of the content of the presentation.

One such undergraduate, Jacob Wagoner, a sophomore applied physics major, gave a presentation on his research which involved a spectral analysis of the supernova remnant Kesteven 75.

“This is the first actual research that I’ve ever done, and at the undergraduate level,” said Wagoner, a Rowan County native. “Research helps when you put on a resume, it helps you look a little better. I just wanted to, basically, for the experience of it.”

Wagoner continued to say there was a lot of potential to continue to this research, or to later incorporate it into his capstone project. His choice in research was driven by his interest in astrophysics, and said he was inspired by great astrophysics such as Carl Sagan.

“I wanted to delve deeper in what an astrophysicist does on a daily,” said the Rowan County High School graduate. “Or what kind of research they actually do.”

The celebration of student scholarship has been an annual event since 2006.
