The Morehead State Rifle team celebrated its senior day Sunday by completing a sweep of visiting UT Martin.

The Eagles took down UT Martin Saturday 4623-4600, and won again Sunday 4645-4622, beating the Skyhawks for the seventh consecutive time, while three seniors competed in their last home stand on the Button Auditorium Range.

In the Smallbore competition, Morehead State’s Erin Diehl shot a team-high 577 on Saturday, and placed third Sunday with a 574. MSU’s Karly Potts topped out Air Rifle Sunday with a 592.

In the Air Rifle Competition Saturday, Senior Alexa Potts shot a 588 out of a possible 600, leading the Eagles. Filling out the five below her were sophomore Amber Schifano at 584, senior Karly Potts at 583, freshman Elizabeth Plecity at 582 and freshman Grace Weber at 581.

“We have a good mix on this year’s team,” said Coach Alan Joseph, of the team’s makeup. The rifle team has five freshmen, three sophomores, one junior and three seniors--nine women and three men.

Joseph also commented on the chemistry between teammates.

“The chemistry is very good, I’ve not had too many teams in my career as a coach with a chemistry as good as we have,” he said. Joseph said the team works well together, staying later than scheduled practices and hanging out outside of the range.

For the first time in his team’s history, the team had a senior day Sunday for Jesse Moyer, Alexa Potts, and Karly Potts.

“I’m kind of watchful of the budget and everything else,” said Joseph, who allowed the underclassmen to set up and host the event. He said they earned it, “because we’re the highest GPA team and one of my seniors is a semester ahead.”

The Eagles revisit UT Martin November 9 and 10 in Martin, TN.
