MARION, Ill. -- Morehead State baseball defeated Austin Peay 9-4 Saturday afternoon to reach the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship round for the second straight season, but ultimately it wasn't enough as MSU fell 10-3 to Jacksonville State in the title contest at Rent One Ballpark.

Morehead State closed its 2019 season with a school-record 40 victories at 40-21, also marking the first time in program history with 40 wins. Before 2015, MSU had just one 30-win campaign but has reached that pleateau every year since.

JSU moves on to an NCAA Regional with a 12-game winning streak and a 37-21 record.

The Eagles routed Eastern Kentucky University 11-3 Friday night in the climb back up the losers' bracket to the championship.

MSU 9, AUSTIN PEAY 4

Senior first baseman Trevor Snyder collected four RBI, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning to bust the game open 5-1.

MSU opened with a pair of runs in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Snyder and a sacrifice fly by senior center-fielder Connor Pauly.

Small ball in the seventh inning pushed the Eagle advantage to 7-2 after the Govs hit a solo homer by OVC home run leader Parker Phillips in the sixth. Junior second baseman Dom Peroni hit a sac fly, and senior catcher Hunter Fain got an RBI on a ground out.

A two-run homer by Austin Peay brought them to within three at 7-4, but Fain's RBI single and senior shortstop Reid Leonard's RBI grounder made it 9-4.

Sophomore Will Lozinak worked the first seven innings, allowing just three earned runs, to improve to 8-1. Junior righty Jake Ziegelmeyer collected his eighth save of the year.

The Eagle bats pounded out 16 hits with seven Eagles gaining multiple-hit efforts. Pauly finished 3-for-4. Pauly and Snyder scored twice as well.

JSU 10, MSU 3

Morehead State struck first but Jacksonville State used a big rally in the middle innings to ultimately win the 2019 OVC title.

Peroni had an RBI ground out in the fourth inning. JSU cranked two RBI doubles and a run-scoring triple in a four-run fourth frame and added two more in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

The Eagles added their third tally in the eighth when Ryan Layne lifted a bases-loaded sac fly to right field.

Senior left-hander David Looney got the starting nod, his first of the season, but gave up four runs in 3.1 innings to be pinned with the loss.

Sophomore Stephen Hill collected three hits, while Snyder finished his career with two more hits.

Hill and Pauly, along with junior pitcher Jason Goe, were honored on the all-tournament team.
