The Rowan County Senior High School band will be featured in the inaugural parade in Frankfort for the first time since 1995.

Rocky Adkins made the announcement Thursday, December 5 at the high school and applauded the students for the hard work they put in to achieve this.

“You have represented this school and this community very, very well,” said Adkins.

Adkins was appointed senior advisor to Governor Elect Andy Beshear and will break his over 30-year run in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

The Sandy Hook native began his journey in the house in 1987. Adkins said Monday, December 9 at close of business is when he will be resigning his seat. They will hold a special election to fill the position where the executive committee from the Democratic and Republican parties will pick their candidate. He estimated the election would be sometime in February.

“I think that people see this is an opportunity for people in our region to really have a seat at the table,” said Adkins. “I’m going to have flexibility and authority to be able to work across all the cabinets and all the agencies.”

John Maxey, superintendent of RCSHS, said the opportunity to be selected for the event is one the students will not forget.

“It’s a great historic event for Kentucky,” said Maxey. “To be able to have our band down there, participating in it and have representation from this end of the state is fantastic.”

Adkins said it was really pleasing to see the faces of the students light up.

The inaugural event will be held on Tuesday, December 10.
