Next Opportunity, ran by Brandy and Mike Whitsman, hosted their third year of trail races kicking it off with the Big Turtle 50 miler, 5k and 10k in Morehead, Ky, on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

“We started the company because we were trail runners and we knew a lot of trail runners but there weren’t any trail running events around here,” said Michael, a Race Director for Next Opportunity.

Over the past three years the Big Turtle race has included runners from 20 states and Canada. The runners said they are drawn to the beauty of the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail.

Nearly all runners expressed a similar sentiment to Mark Rebholz when asked why they trail run.

“It’s more fun to run in the woods; if you are having a bad at least you are somewhere beautiful,” added Rebholz, first place runner in the 10k Big Turtle Race.
