A festive holiday season for needy families and seniors in Rowan County is currently underway.

Rowan County Christmas, a non-profit organization established in 1993, is working to provide gifts and food vouchers for families in need in the Rowan County area for the holidays. The service provides the opportunity for families to enjoy to spirit of Christmas despite financial difficulties.

“They get gifts that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to provide for their children,” said Rhonda Holley, a Chairman for the RCC. “And the seniors, they wouldn’t get anything for Christmas. So, we make sure that they have at least something and we make sure they have some food to enjoy a Christmas dinner.”

Fundraising throughout the year raises money for gifts for children between the ages 0-18 and seniors 65 and above. If there are enough funds, food vouchers will also be provided.

The RCC has provided these services for roughly 600 families in need, one of which is the family of Betty Fraley

“It helps me out a lot during the holidays,” said Fraley. “I’m just glad that the community pulls together to do this. It’s a really good program.”

Fraley’s family has been aided by the RCC for several years. She said her children love receiving the presents.

“I mean they’re happy with it and they’re glad they got something,” said Fraley. “It makes me happy that they can receive them.”

Fraley said she and her family are grateful for the RCC to provide this service to those in need like themselves.
