The Rowan County Public Library held a program called Cookies, Crafts, and LGBT History in order to educate others about the LGBT community.

Those who attended the event watched a slideshow that explained important events in LGBT history, such as the Stonewall Riots that first started the Pride movement that continues today.

“We have been doing a lot more progressive stuff recently,” said Cat Haggard, library employee and host of Tuesday night’s program. “I was the one who brought it up to do it. I really wanted there to be an event during October for History month to help people learn things.”

The slideshow also included definitions for many of the sexualities and genders included in the LGBT community and gave a list of famous figures who consider themselves a part of the community, which is a critical step in making LGBT members feel accepted.

“We strive to be as inclusive as possible,” said Jess Brock, Program Coordinator at the library.

After the slideshow, attendees were encouraged to make perler bead creations to express themselves. The library also provided a selection of books available for check-out that discussed LGBT topics so attendees could learn more.
