It was hearing his parents sing at a young age that got him into music, but it was his wife who tricked him into stardom.

After learning to play guitar at 9 and writing his first song at 12, Marty Brown began playing at local venues at 14. Whether he was on a riverbank or on tour with Hank Williams Jr., the Maceo, Ky. native found happiness in sharing the music he created with others and living out the dream of being a singer like his parents.

“They’d have these little singalongs and I’d go get the clothes basket, and I’d bring it in there, curl up in it and turn it upside down and lay in there and look through the cracks at my mama and my daddy, and listen to them sing the old classic songs like Hank Sr.,” said Brown.

Brown, who headlined Saturday’s Rowan County Fair, is best known for his appearance in season eight of America’s Got Talent, where he advanced to the semi-finals after being tricked by his wife into auditioning.

“I’d write those songs around the house and sing to her, and I remember she called me and said ‘Marty, we’re gonna go get a romantic lunch,’ and I thought ‘Ok, let’s go,’” said Brown. “Over lunch, she told me she tricked me and signed me up for America’s Got Talent. Next thing I know, we’ve got two plane tickets to go to San Antonio, Texas.”

Brown said he would not be where he is if it were not for his wife, Shellie Brown.

While on America’s Got Talent, the song Make You Feel My Love went viral, gaining the attention of many viewers and receiving a ‘yes’ vote from all four judges. While six years have passed since his audition, Brown has kept the same views on his music, that it should be real and from the heart.

“I just kind of write from the heart and sing from the heart for the people that are out there,” said Brown.

Brown has a new single out now, I’m a Country Boy, which he hopes will gain as much popularity as Make You Feel My Love.
