100 percent of veterinary science majors from Morehead State who applied to a veterinary school were accepted this semester.

Six students were accepted to the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine and two were accepted to the Lincoln Memorial University School of Veterinary MedicineSince only around 20 percent of all veterinary science majors are qualified for veterinary school, the number is much higher than previous years.

“From Mexico City to Canada, there are 37 vet schools,” said Dr. Phillip Prater, a veterinary technology major at Morehead State. “So, you have tens of thousands of students that are applying for maybe 3,000 positions.”

Since every veterinary school has different requirements, Prater said the vet science major is very science oriented.

Prater said he would like for more students to understand that to be a veterinary science major, you have to love both animals and science.

Students are required to take four semesters of chemistry, six to eight semesters of biology, one to two semesters of physics and precalculus in addition to animal related classes and 500 hours of veterinary experience.

“I would love to see more students at least get to the point where they can apply to vet school,” said Prater.
