A professor at Morehead State has captured the “pen gene.”

After the passing of her father, Dr. Deborah Plum discovered pens when cleaning out his home. She recalls discovering a big bag full of pens. That’s when, like her father, she became a collector.

Her sister became fond of the pens as well. The siblings often joke about the pen gene. “If there is [a pen gene], we both inherited it because we tease each other about how many pens we have,” said Plum.

Many of Plum's students know about her fascination towards pens. Some of the pens she has collected come from her students.

She recalled a time a student handed her a pen at the end of the year that happened to be hand-made from a deer antler by the student's grandfather. The student expressed her gratitude through the pen after Plum loaned her a personal textbook she needed for her class.

“A lot of [the pens] have silly stories and a lot of them have touching stories,” Plum said. “They mean different things because of the stories behind them.”
